Also, Vengeful Spirit, one of the newer Horus Heresy books covers a lot of stuff regarding Horus, but there's a LARGE side plot that involves Mortarion and how the plagues infect the Death Guard (This might be what you're lookign for based off of what it sounds like) There's quite a bit of the Death Guards in "Galaxy in Flames" towards the end.
